Another dominant performance from the Wolves on a tiny pitch! The girls bossed the game from the first minute to the last, meaning Rose didn't need to make a save all game! That being said Rose did brilliantly coming off her line on multiple occasions to pick up long balls that made it through to her box and made some great opportunities going forward with some big kicks.
Our centre midfielders in Sienna, Frances and Jasmine totally controlled the game, winning the ball back quickly on the rare occasions that we didn't have it. On the wings Millie and Amalia did really well, firing some great crosses into the box that we just didn't quite get on the end of.
Marlow had one fast defender who did a good job of clearing any danger from our attacks by kicking it clear in whichever way she was facing, this gave us loads of corners in the first half which were really well delivered into the box but we weren't sharp enough to steer them goal wards.
On 25 minutes the same defender scored a worldy of an own goal from 15 yards with a 'clearance' into her own net, giving their keeper no chance.
As we have seen in other games when the girls sense that we are stronger than the other team the desire to pass the ball around drops off with everyone eager to get on the score sheet. On such a small pitch it was rare to get the space for these dribbles with us often losing possession before getting a shot away. This got much better in the second half with POM Frances combining with a lovely one-two before Maddie smashed it home. Frances deservedly won POM of the match as she led by example in the 2nd half, getting her head up and making some great passes which in turn got the rest of the team passing. This was rewarded with Frances scoring herself with another great combination with Maddie, earning Maddie the MIM for some great movement and communication with her team mates, causing the opposition defence all sorts of problems.
Sienna scored a brilliant solo goal on 55 minutes beating a few players with a driving run and great finish to seal the 4-0 result.
Defensively Sophia, Neve and Abigail were rock solid, reading the game well, making some great interceptions and tackles and staying cool under pressure to find a pass out to our players to maintain possession.
Overall I certainly can't fault the result and in patches I thought we played really well. The difference between a good team and a great team is all in the passing and movement. It is frustrating, because I know that we can do it, but need to keep our discipline on passing the ball around when we sense we are better than the other team. In my opinion today we held onto the ball too long, too often, and had too many girls looking to be a hero and do it all themselves. Football is a team game, when we keep our shape, keep our heads up and keep the ball moving we pull other teams apart and create chances for everyone. We could easily have had ten today with a bit more discipline but 4-0 is by no means a disappointment :)
A tough game next week against the league leaders and we'll need to be at our best, as a team, if we want to get a result.
There is a reason that we have focused so much on passing and movement in training over the last few weeks as this is the key to take this team to the next level. Our determination and tenacity is second to none and with a little more finesse we could be something really special! Well done girls. We go again next week!
